Carbon build up

Carbon build up can make a good engine feel tired, rough, and inconsistent.

Intake carbon deposits restrict airflow and can cause symptoms that look like electrical or fuel system faults.

Common signs of intake carbon build up

  • Rough idle, especially from cold
  • Random or cylinder-specific misfires
  • Hesitation when pulling away
  • Low-speed torque loss
  • Poor economy or increased smoke
  • Airflow plausibility or EGR related codes

Why direct injection engines are vulnerable

With port injection, fuel passes over the intake valves and helps keep them cleaner. With direct injection, fuel is injected into the cylinder, so the intake valves are exposed to oil vapour and soot without the same cleaning effect.

Walnut blasting removes the deposit directly, giving the engine a clear intake path again where carbon is the restriction.
